Lower Junior Cup
Wicken Sports Res 4
There is not much to be said
about this game from a Pegasus perspective. Wicken were hungrier, sharper and
more physical than Pegasus in every position with a greater desire to work hard
and win their tussles.
The wind was very strong and
straight down the middle, with Wicken winning the toss and deciding to kick with
the wind. With the wind at their backs Wicken pressed hard playing a lot of
balls into the Pegasus area. It was difficult to clear your lines and even
goal-kicks struggling to reach the half-way line. It was all Wicken and it was
no surprise when they took the lead mid-way through the first half, another ball
into the Pegasus area falling to a Wicken forward.
So at half-time Wicken were
one to the good, but Pegasus felt as though they were let off the hook a little
and were feeling upbeat about coming out for the second half with the wind to
aid them.
It was the worst possible
start to the half for Pegasus as straight from kick-off they conceded a corner
and then Wicken were awarded a penalty for a handball from the corner. So
Pegasus where two down and now chasing the game.
However instead of rolling
their sleeves up and getting up for the fight Pegasus did the exact opposite and
just lay down letting Wicken walk all over them and it was only due to poor
finishing by the Wicken forwards that the game finished with Wicken only scoring
four.
It was not that Pegasus got
defeated it was the manner in which they got beat. There was no fight, desire,
energy or the pride in the player’s individual performance. Anyone can talk a
good game before or after the event, but it is what you do on the pitch that
counts and in the end there are 11 players against 11 payers.
