Corby Pegasus F.C.
NFA Are Cup Final
Pegasus win 4 - 2 on
penalties.
Pegasus Reserves
became the first ever Pegasus side to compete in an N.F.A. final and they
brought home the Area Cup trophy at the end of a pulsating affair.
In a fairly dull first
half in which both sides looked nervous, Wooton had the best of the chances
and after hitting a post, they went in at half time 1 nil ahead with a fine
angled drive.
Pegasus came out in
determined mood for the second half and equalised in the first minute when
Willie Wild's corner was headed home by Stephen McCabe. It was a game of
few chances as two evenly matched sides cancelled each other out, but
disaster struck for Pegasus with 25 minutes to go. A fierce cross from the
Wooton winger was met with an attempted clearance by Glen Harris who only
succeeded in heading past his own keeper.
This knocked the
stuffing out of Pegasus, who brought on Andy Mullin for the injured Stephen
McCabe. They also brought on offensive players Ashley Duffy and Connor
Grant. Duffy almost scored with his first touch, and with Grant given his
side fresh impetus, Pegasus were looking good for the equaliser.
With three minutes to
go, however, Wooton should have won the Cup when with an open goal at his
mercy, the Wooton number 10 somehow hit the post!!! With the clock ticking
away, another Wild corner caused panic stations, and when they failed to
clear, Ashley Duffy headed home to take the tie to extra time with seconds
to spare!!
Extra time came and
went without many incidents, and brought about the dreaded penalty shoot
out. Own goal villain, Glen Harris was the first to step up to the plate for
Pegasus to fire his side in front, before keeper Hugo Fernandes saved the
first Wooton effort. Skipper Chris Hurling then put his side in the driving
seat, before Wooton missed again, this time hitting the bar. Rob Allan then
had his penalty superbly saved by the Wooton keeper, before Wooton scored at
the third attempt. Willie Wild then put Pegasus within sight of the trophy,
before Wooton made it 3 - 2. It was then left for Ashley Duffy, the hero in
the last minute of normal time, to step up and win the Cup for the
Both clubs were a
credit to the League and now go head to head in the battle for the Reserve
Division One title.
